Departing from Vollèges, this itinerary will quickly take you high above the Val de Bagnes, through meadows and forests, with breathtaking views.
From Vollèges in the Val de Bagnes, follow the road to the summit of the Pierre Avoi, pedaling through pastures. The 11.2-kilometer ascent to 1686 meters above sea level is steady all the way. The special feature of this route to the Col du Lein is the dirt road on the final stretch. Along the way, you'll enjoy a unique panorama of surrounding peaks such as Catogne, Tête de la Payanne and Mont Rogneux.
Facing due north, this route is one of the sunniest in the Val de Bagnes, making it accessible early in the cycling season.
From Vollèges, a 1.5 km descent to the Etiez station takes you to the foot of the Col. The first 5 km cling to the hillside and are dominated by the imposing Crevasse cliffs. A steady slope of 7-8% to the village of Vens serves as an appetizer, before the final 3 km at 9.3%! In the midst of alpine pastures, you'll be rewarded with a magnificent panorama overlooking the Combins massif, Catogne, Pierre Avoi and Chavalard.
Author's note: The Col des Planches (alt. 1'408m) is the starting point of a panoramic route that winds its way along a sort of ridge to the summit of the Col du Tronc (alt. 1'608m) and the Col du Lein (alt. 1'686m). The 2.8 kilometers of dirt roads are also suitable for road bikes.
